(Via Enterprise Linux IT.)

I am banging out this column on an exquisite, piano-black all-in-one desktop PC. The guts of this glossy computer are crammed inside a trim and easily tilted 19-inch wide-screen flat-panel LCD monitor. The keyboard and mouse are wireless. The invisible stereo speaker is behind an acrylic front panel. A slot-loading DVD burner is on the right; disk ejection is handled by pressing the keyboard. Only a single power cable emerges from the rear bottom of the machine.

Must be something Steve Jobs cooked up, right? Not quite.

I’ve been testing the brand-new Gateway One, the latest all-in-one computer from the country’s No. 3 PC company. The machines will become available at Gateway.com and Best Buy later this month.

Gateway One invites inevitable comparisons to Apple’s sexy all-in-one iMacs. While I’d still give the spine-tingling aesthetic edge to Apple, the Gateway takes up less room and deserves to be part of the conversation. Plus, with such niceties as an external USB TV tuner (included in the high-end, $1,800 pre-production model I tested), and a slot for digital camera memory cards, Gateway One has features not found on the iMac.

I’m not going to go whole hog into a Windows vs. Macintosh comparison. Suffice to say, Mac devotees would all too quickly point out that the Gateway, like any Windows-based computer, can’t hold a candle to the virus-resistant Mac OS X operating system software or the bundled iLife suite of slick multimedia applications included on all new Macs.

But for those in the market for an attractive new Windows Vista computer, you can do a whole lot worse than the Gateway One. There are three Gateway One configurations, starting at $1,300. Each comes with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, Vista Home Premium and Microsoft Works software. My test system was outfitted with a 500-gigabyte hard drive,…

Verizon created quite a buzz earlier this week when they announced the imminent release of four new phones on their network to take place this year. The next version of the BlackBerry Pearl was announced along with the Juke, Venus and the phone that caught everyone’s attention, the Voyager. Not wanting to leave our readers in the dark today I was fortunate enough to have lunch with Patrick Kimball

The good folks over at ASUS have sent over the P5E3 Deluxe, which is based upon Intel’s new X38 Chipset and continues in the usual ASUS fashion of pushing new (and often unexpected) innovations onto the motherboard. Without spoiling the review of this motherboard that will be published shortly, the ASUS P5E3 Deluxe is one of the most innovative motherboards we have seen to date and it packs one very exciting and unusual feature.

Embedded onto the P5E3 Deluxe is a Linux environment that features a Firefox-rebranded web browser and the Skype VoIP client! Within five seconds of turning on this $360 USD gaming/enthusiast motherboard, you can be using Linux and surfing the Internet. On this motherboard the feature is known as ASUS Express Gate, which is powered by something called SplashTop. SplashTop is an instant-on Linux desktop being created by DeviceVM. SplashTop isn’t even launching for a few more days (October 10), but in this article we have more details on this embedded Linux environment as well as screenshots and our thoughts with what will hopefully come next for this Linux environment.
